Pickford plays Molly, the oldest girl in an “orphan farm” in the Louisiana bayou. The owners of the farm, the vile and opprobrious Grimes family, offer to care for children of families experiencing hardship, then exploit and neglect the children in the most appalling manner. Sparrows is a gripping melodrama, praised for merging the social concerns of Charles Dickens and the techniques of German Expressionism. The film is presented to mark the centenary of Pickford’s film debut and it will feature live musical accompaniment by Gabriel Thibaudeau, who has composed scores for numerous silent films including the Robert Flaherty classic Nanook of the North.
