An illicit affair between an introverted high school teacher and his pupil spirals out of control, in this controversial South African-set noir directed by Jahmil X.T. Qubeka.
Schoolteacher Parker Sithole (Mothusi Magano) has arrived in a rural South African township with no local connections, but his unassuming disposition inspires trust and sympathy, and he is deemed “of good report” with a glowing recommendation from his previous employer. But when he falls in love with a young woman (Petronella Tshuma) only to discover that she is one of his new pupils, their love story goes awry, and secrets and obsession tear them apart. Controversial and uncompromising, Of Good Report is not your typical crime of passion.
Feature-debut for director Jahmil X.T. Qubeka.
[The film was due to open the 34th Durban International Film Festival in July, 2013. However, on the day of the screening the film was banned by the state-run Film and Publications Board.
Following the censorship controversy citing that it "promotes child abuse & pornography" the South African Film & Publications Board reversed their decision and gave the film the US equivalent of an R-rating.
The film was not screened in any of its allocated slots during the festival, however the Durban International Film Festival acknowledged the film’s achievements in stimulating worldwide debate and highlighting important issues in South African society, and therefore announced a new annual award for Artistic Bravery, given to Qubeka.]
