The Lady In The Van  [2015]
DirectorNicholas Hytner
CastDominic Cooper, James Corden, Maggie Smith
The legendary Maggie Smith stars in this adaptation of the based-on-fact play by acclaimed author Alan Bennett (The Madness of King George), about a high-born homeless woman fallen on hard times who found temporary shelter parking her van in Bennett’s driveway — for fifteen years.
Based on the true story of Miss Shepherd, a woman of uncertain origins who “temporarily” parked her van in writer Alan Bennett’s London driveway and proceeded to live there for 15 years. What begins as a begrudged favour becomes a relationship that will change both their lives. Filmed on the street and in the house where Bennett and Miss Shepherd lived all those years, acclaimed director Nicholas Hytner reunites with iconic writer Alan Bennett (The Madness of King George, The History Boys) to bring this rare and touching portrait to the screen.
Alan Bennett, screenwriter: "[Miss Shepherd] was difficult and eccentric but above all she was poor. And these days particularly the poor don't get much of a look in. Poverty is a moral failing today as it was under the Tudors. If the film has a point, it's about fairness and tolerance and however grudgingly helping the less fortunate, who are not well thought of these days. And now likely to be even less so."
